We are already at the end of 2012 and at the writing of this article the World, according to some, will go under. After all, it is supposed to be the end of the Mayan calendar and the date is 12/21/12. Now, is the world going under? Well, not from what I can see from my window, but what I can see is a change, a different World. A change to the World we know as the World Wide Web. A change that has been in motion since 2008.
Back in 2008, John Fallows, my co-founder and I had the fortune to take part in a true revolution, a Web communication revolution. This revolution was based on the fact that a small group of individuals had decided to challenge the assumptions of the Web and the be-all end-all Web communication standard HTTP. The proposal was eventually named WebSocket and initially resided within the W3C HTML5 specification and later split in two halves – one part JavaScript API residing under the umbrella of HTML5 and W3C, and one part a standalone protocol standard under the supervision of IETF.
Since we are celebrating the first year of the acceptance of this standard (RFC 6455) and for John and me 4 years of speaking, evangelizing, and promoting this new standard, I thought it would be fun to share some old videos from the very first recorded public sessions on the topic of WebSocket. These sessions are from Devoxx 2008 and thanks to the organizer they have been saved for posterity on Parleys.com
